Dear Readers of Carolina! I am terribly sorry but the English version of Carolina No. 149 has just been deleted from the harddisk of our "Carolina" computer by accidance and cannot be undeleted anymore. Our English editor has already left and my knowledge of Englich is too poor for translating into English. Under a preasure of time, I decided to give you some short "reader's digest" of what supposed to be the content of current issue. I hope that the text will remain at least understandable. With apology for raping a mother language of so many nice people faithfully yours Jan Jirak Klaus and Havel in Agreement over Czech-German Relations Franz Neubauer, spokesperson for the Sudetan Germans, criticised a speech given by Czech president Vaclav Havel on February 17, in Prague's Carolina. In an interview with German paper Die Welt, Neubauer said that in evaluating the problems of the Sudetan Germans in former Czechoslovakia, Havel can not hold his ground against "historical experts." He went on to emphasize that the Sudetan Germans are not offsetting compensation of Czech victims with Nazism, but are requesting compensation for "German victims of Czech wrongdoing". Ulrich Irmer, foreign political spokesperson for the German Free Democrat Part evaluated Havel's speech favorably. The statements of Sudetan German union are overestimated in Czech Republic, said Irmer. Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus supported the opinion of president Havel during his speech in Hamburg, Germany. Italian Preident Visiting Czech Republic Italian president Oscaro Luigi Scalfaro arrived to Prague for three day visit. He met with Vaclav Havel a claimed satisfaction with the level of Czech - Italian relations and expressed the Italian support of membership of Czech republic in all European structures. Italian president welcome the preparation of the agreement of good relations and cooperation between Czech Republic and Italy. Prime Ministers of Czech Republic and Hungary Met Last Monday Vaclav Klaus and Hungarian Prime Minister Gyula Horn met on Monday and discussed way of increasing the economic connections, decreasing the import taxex on agricultural goods, agree ment on protection of investment and other topics. According to Hungarian Prime Minister, the main interest of Hungary in mutual relations with CR is a balanced trade. To help in reaching this goal, Czech government should support state purchase of Hunngarian goods. Klaus mentioned a possibility of purchasing Hungarian buses Ikarus, metro wagons, healthcare instruments etc. The Czech Republic and Drug Trade Multinational gangs use countries of the Eastern block as a transfer area increasingly. According to the UN International Board for Drug Control, South American traders even chose the Prague airport of Ruzyne for handing over the consignment. Heroin gets to Europe in lorries from Turkey and Pakistan, cocain is smuggled by Colombian cartels which send the consignments by air. Eastern European countries that had so far been just the transfer countries for drugs are becoming target countries. With the inflow of drugs, criminality rises, mostly money-laundering, prostitution and bribery. A contraband of cocaine has been discovered by the police on Feb 24 on the Ruzyne airport. A special anti-drug squad detained a Colombian who arrived by the airline Bogota-Frankfurt-Prague. Two kilograms of the drug were hidden in the double bottom of his suitcase. The police and customs officers had known about the matter in advance and thus they managed to get ready. The greatest success has been so far achieved at the border crossing in Nachod. In 1991 nearly 100 kg of cocaine was unveiled there. Last year's illegal trade deal with efedrine has presently become a great offence. The International Board for Drug Control published a report on an attempt to sell illegally to Mexico 50 tons of efedrine coming probably from a Czech pharmaceutical firm. The Celebration of WWII After a long lasting confusion over how to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of liberation from fascism, the government approved of a conception of the commemorations of the end of World War II. It is not clear so far which delegations will be invited. Vaclav Havel said after the government meeting that the opinion to invite even the German representatives won in the discussion. Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus, however, said it was not decided yet and warned at the same time that the issue "should not be turned into a internal political problem". The Czech Association of Fighters for Freedom, where also war veterans are associated, defied the visit of German officials. The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSCM) entertains the opinion that there should be living representatives of German anti-Fascist forces. The Czech Social Democratic Party chairman (CSSD) Milos Zeman would invite those Germans for whom 8th May 1945 meant liberation from Nazism. His party colleague H. Orgonikova would invite no German delegation as she considers it "immoral". On the contrary, the nonparliamentary Free Democrats assume fifty years after the war European states should not be divided into the winners and the defeated. Government coalition are mostly affirmative about possible participance of the German delegation. The Minister of transport Jan Strasky is an exception saying Germans should not be present at the undertaking. The list of official guests and a blueprint of commemorations will be worked out within a fortnight. New Weapons for Czech Army? Czech Republic cannot afford to buy expensive military technology from teh United States and countries of Western Europe, said Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus and head commander of Czech Army top management Jiri Nekvasil. Though the American technology is the best, the Czech Army must rely upon updating of Soviet tanks and aircrafts. Humanitarian Aid to Cheycheynia Thre trucks with humanitarian aid for people who escaped from Cheycheynia left Prague on February 28. The aid has been organized by the Adventist Agency for Help and Development (ADKA). The trucks has arrive to Nazra town on March 1. There are about a hundred thousand people waiting there for help. Two truck are financially supproed by the Czech government, the third one by funds given by supporters, helpers and colaborators of the Agency. FROM SLOVAKIA The Changes in Slovak Intelligence Service The director of Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS) Vladimir Mitra send a letter to Slovak president Michal Kovac asking him for a permission to leave the position of director of SIS. Slovak president did not accepted the letter and will not do it before he get the name of a new candidate. ECONOMY Export vs. Import The import to CR is bigger that the export from CR for last nine months. The true is that the import is increasing but the export is remaining on the same level. CULTURE The Residence of Czech Monarchs Was Damaged By a Foreign Vandal One of the walls of castle Karlstejn was significantly damaged last week by tourists during a sightseeing tour. This national, cultural and historic building was founded in 14th century by the emperor Karel IV. (Charles 4th) as a place for the czech crown jewels. On the renaissance fasade with the original gotic base and the inscriptions from 16th century, an unknow offender made a grafitti. He put a three feet high orange ornament on a dark wall. The same motive appeared on one of the battlement's tooth during the day . The representative of the warden of castle Tomas Rehor said that in during the time of a crime, two groups were in the castle, a Danish one and some Italian. The Italian visitors have been held before they leave the castle, and the police examine them. The offender has not been identified. The restoration will cost some 15 thousand krowns minimum. The offenders, if arrested, are threatened for the damage of the monument from 6 months to 3 years. Tereza Hadrova Pin for a Butterfly - Fifties Seen by a Small Girl The movie production company Heureka film brought to our cinemas a new movie made by British director of Czech origin Hannah Kodicek Pin for a Butterfly. The story takes place during the hard period of fifties in former Czechoslovakia. The whole story is seen by the eyes of the main hero, the six year old girl Maruska. The child's view on such a complicated period of Czech history is quite exeptional in our cinamatografy. We should mention the acting of of Florence Hoathova (Maruska), the camera of Ivan Slapeta and the directing of H. Kodicek. The film is presented in Czech cinemas in the original English version with subtitles. Tomas Kopecny The Programme CT 2 Should Remain Still in Czech Television In Czech republic should still remain two public television channels. This was the decision of the participant's of Friday's meeting and the prime minister Vaclav Klaus. According to the Mlada fronta Dnes daily, entertaining programmes would disappear from Czech television in case the public TV has only one channel. The director of the competitive private television Nova Vladimir Zelezny, is also regarding the requirments of CT for two chanels acceptable. According to his saying the advertising market in CR is not large enough to support another complete commercial station. In Czech republic three television stations boradcast on a nationalwide level. network. Czech television covers two of them, a private TV Nova covers the third one. The fourth is currently formed through connection of regional stations by the private TV station Premiera. According to the newest results of statistical research the most watched TV station is Nova, then CT 1 and CT 2. Jindrich Jirasek SPORTS Who Will Participate in Czech Playoff?
