FROM LAST WEEK'S EVENTS (June 2-9, 1993) Standard Czech-Slovak border as of July 1? Slovak premier Vladimir Meciar denied on Friday creating of a fixed border with the Czech Republic. According to him, the border is conditioned with issue of gold from the reserves of the former federation. Meciar reacted to the letter from Premier of the Czech government in Slovak radio saying: "We do not want fixed border for our citizens, we would appreciate if the Czech side made some helpful steps." Vaclav Kluas appealed to him in his letter that the Slovak side should sign a treaty on border crossings. According to Minister of the Interior of the Czech Republic Jan Ruml, in case of Slovak denial of the agreements on crossing points the Czech Republic will impose unilateral regime as of July 1. Czech Premier says that the treaty will not inflict the relations between Czech and Slovak inhabitants because the treaty concerns only people from third countries. According to Slovak Minister of Foreign Affaires Jozef Moravcik, in this case the Slovak side would not object. The Slovak Premier will give a qualified answer to the letter after discussions on the attitudes of both sides in the Slovak government because such an important step, according to him calls for consideration of broader European political connesctions and interests of inhabitants to both the republics. On Monday the Czech government said that they will not react to Friday's proposal of Vladimir Meciar concerning the exchange of a fixed border for gold from the reserves of the former Czechoslovakia. Public opinion on the entry into EC and NATO, and on credibility of politicians. From May's survey of the Institute for Public Poll it comes out that two thirds of the population of the Czech Republics are for entry to the EC while 12 percent of them, mostly oldish peop- le are against it. Almost a half of people would appreciate entry into NATO, 35 percent would oppose it. People expect that the entry to EC will bring improvement of international relations and cooperation, improvement of the state of Czech economy, increased prosperity and living standard. In May the Institute also carried out a survey of inhabitants'confidence in Czech politicians. As in the results, people trust the most politicians of the governmental coalition and the President: Minister of Industry and Trade Vladimir Dlouhy (72 percent trust him, 23 percent don't), President Vaclav Havel (70/28), Minister of Transport Jan Strasky (67/17), Premier Vaclav Klaus (63/31). More than 50 percent of the inhabitants trust also Minister of Finance Ivan Kocarnik, Jiri Dienstbier (the top opposition politician as in the ladder, ex-minister of Foreign Affaires), and Jan Kalvoda, vice-chairman of the government. The most controversial politician was in May Chairman of Czech Social Democratical Party, Milos Zeman. 46 percent do not trust him and 43 percent trust him. CULTURE Adam Michnik in Prague Editor-in-chief of daily Gazeta Wyborcza, Adam Michnik participated on June 7 at a panel discussion on the theme Europe after communism - unity or disintegration, in Polish Cultural Centre in Prague. Apart from Jiri Dienstbier, Dana Nemcova, Martin Palous, Radim Palous, Alexander Vondra, and Karel Schwarzenberga there were also many journalists, sociologists, political experts including Jacques Rupnik attending. Adam Mich- nik who visited the territory of Bosnia and Hercegovina recently, said that the time of European peace is over. The former Yugosla- via is a miniature of central Europe. The idea of ethnical purity can be realized only through military power. Those responsible for the national hatred must be named, and this deadly epidemy must not spread any further. Evil and good is in each of us. This debate penatrated philosophical and political levels, those who discussed were pesimists as well as optimists. At the end they agreed that even if oficial organizations are not able to stop the war, the citizens cannot reconcile with it and take to indifference. SPORT Finals of Czechoslovak Football Cup In South Moravian Postorna the winners of the Czech and Slo- vak football Cup, Prague's Sparta and East Slovakian 1.FC Kosice played form the last time. "The paper" favorite did not confirm the assumptions and lost to second-league Slovak team with an incredible score 1:5! Sparta Praha ensured its participance in next year's Masters Cup. WEATHER Weather in the Czech Republic is constantly the same - clear sky with morning temperatures around 12 degrees, and afternoon one between 22-17 degrees. In some places there were rainfalls and storms. The total ozone layer above our territory is by 12 percent thinner than the long-term normal state. Occasional visits to swimming pools on weekends remind us of real summer. FEJS HISTORY Founded in 1986 in Laage Vuursche, the Netherlands, FEJS is the only organisation of Journalism students in Europe. Its purpose is to promote cooperation between educational journalism institutions on international level, organizing student exchanges, and meetings on important topics of these days. Nowadays FEJS has over 500 student members and up to 200 faculty members all over Europe. The General Secretariat of the Organization is based in Zwolle, the Netherlands, where the last 8th annual meeting took place this year. The ex-FEJS members have founded the FEJS Veterans' Organization in order to maintain the cooperation among young journalists of Europe also after finishing their education. FEJS meetings were held in Laage Vuursche (Holland), Porto (Portugal), Vienna (Austria), Tampere (Finland), Nantes (France), St.Petersburg (Russia), Athens (Greece) and Zwolle (Holland) II. FEJS 1994 IN PRAGUE AND BRATISLAVA The next annual meeting of FEJS will be held in Prague and Bratislava as decided upon in Zwolle (from 3 candidates: Marseille, Ankara and joint Prague-Bratislava project). This meeting will be the second one (after St.Petersburg, Russia) in the former socialist countries. After the meeting in Vienna in 1988, FEJS returns to Central Europe. The position of Prague and Bratislava enables everyone from East and West to come. The joint project of Prague's Faculty of Journalism at Charles University and Department of Journalism at Bratislava's Comenius University suggests the idea of unifying more than 25 European countries through young people of two recently separated countries. Moreover, the theme of this congress - "Manipulation of the Media" - is perhaps more topical here in a post-communist state than elsewhere. III. ASSUMPTED PROGRAM OF THE CONGRESS 1.
