FROM THE EVENTS OF THE LAST WEEK (Dec. 25 to Dec. 31) V. Meciar and V. Klaus Meet On Sunday, December 27, Vladimir Meciar and Vaclav Klaus met again in Hotel Borik in Bratislava. After the meeting, the Slovak Premier told the journalists that in his republic, voucher privatization will not continue. On the other hand, V. Klaus confirmed that in CR, one more round will take place. Both Premiers emphasized that neither side has yet decided on the nomination of an Ambassador to the other country. According to V. Klaus, the post of an Ambassador will be no less important than a post of a Minister in the Czech government. Applications for Citizenship To this date, the Ministry for Internal Affairs of the Czech Republic has received more than 35,000 applications by Slovak citizens for Czech citizenship. This number is increasing at the rate of three thousand a day. A citizen of SR just has to state the given name and surname, date and place of birth, residence and marital status. Applications can be submitted until the end of 1993. New Customs Crossings Between the Czech and the Slovak Republic, altogether 18 customs crossings will be in operation, eleven of them on highways and seven on railways. The first ones have been finished at Sudomerice, next in line are in Mosty u Jablunkova, Horni Becva, Velke Karlovice, Strelna, Brumov and Lanzhot. Debate on Ministerial Seats On Tuesday, the chairmen of the Czech governmental coalition started the first round of negotiations about filling the posts of the Deputy Premier, the newly created posts of the Minister of Defence and Minister of Transportation, the function of the Director of Security and Information Services and the Inspector General of the army. KDU-CSL (the Christian-Democratic Union/People's Party) is interested in the post of the Defence Minister, and is nominating the Deputy Prime Minister of the former Federal government, Antonin Baudys. KDS is recommending its candidate to be in charge of the department of transportation. We will inform you about the results of these negotiations. The Division of the Transit Gas Pipeline Finalized The transit gas pipeline will be divided on the territorial basis into two national companies which will together found a third, supernational company. This company will function as a partner in foreign negotiations. This arrangement was agreed upon by the Ministers of Industry of the respective Republics, V. Dlouhy and L. Cernak. This step solves one of the most complex property disputes between the newly formed republics. The Prague Spring 1993 The international music festival Prague Spring is now distributing a detailed outline of its 48th year. For the period from May 12 to June 1, over fifty concert and opera performances are in preparation. As a partial departure from the tradition, it is the Liverpool Philharmony which will give the opening performance of Smetana's Ma vlast (My country). Tickets can already be ordered. What Is GEN? The independent film and television corporation FEBIO, which captured the viewers' interest by a documentary film series OKO (The Eye), has presented its new project GEN - a serial called The Gallery of the Nation's Elite, in which they will line up 100 quarter-hour video portraits of our most famous personalities from the arts, politics, sciences, sports, medicine, banking, and business. The father of this project is a film director Fero Fenic; the first four works were created by directors Juraj Jakubosko (on V. Klaus), Jan Nemec (on the creative artist Ester Krumbachova), Olga Sommerova (on the priest Vaclav Maly), and Ondrej Toman (on V. Havel).
