THE EVENTS OF THE LAST WEEK (from June 10-17) The coalition negotiations between ODS and HZDS go on: Vaclav Klaus is proposed as Czech Prime Minister, Vladimir Meciar as Slovak Prime Minister The third meeting of elections' winners- the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) and the Movement for Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) took place in Prague on June 10. Six hours long meeting brought the idea about final structure of our government. New government should have 10 members. Slovakian side cancelled the meeting in Bratislava at the last moment because there were not discussed all problems at party's negotiations during weekend. Next round of negotiations is expected to take place in Bratislava on June 19. Delegations of ODS and HZDS at the Castle The President Havel was visited by delegations of two parties that won the elections. Both parties are working now on creating the federal government. HZDS Refuses Candidacy of Vaclav Havel for President The President met V. Meciar, the chairman of HZDS on June 15. V. Meciar informed about negotiations inside his party and interpretated the decision of his party not to support the candidatory of Vaclav Havel for president. HZDS will accept common currency and state defence to transform Czechoslovakia into defence-currency union only. Vaclav Havel asked the party not to take the steps that are contrary to the constitution. HZDS wants to declare the indepedence of Slovakia and accept Slovakian constitution before referendum. ODS: We Must Act Quickly According to Vaclav Klaus, the chairman of ODS and the Minister of Finance, HZDS puts stronger and stronger arguments dealing with independency of Slovakia that should be internationaly accepted. "This is unacceptable for ODS", said Vaclav Klaus. Both representatives agreed that negotiations toward the new government's creation should take place as quickly as possible. ODS will do everything for concrete result of the meeting on June 19. Vaclav Havel denied the accusation that both parties were overstepping their authority when they negotiated toward the new state administration. This problem can be solved with referendum only. ODS came with a plan for a new government at the last meeting. Both parties agreed that the first run of voucher privatization will be finished without any changes. ODS can't accept intention of Slovakian partner to abolish screening law. Hungarians for Autonomy In the case of independent Slovakia will Hungarian Christian-Democratic Movement (MKDH) ask for territorial autonomy as a guarantee of Hungarian minority rights? Meciar in Wien "The elections have shown that Slovakia prefers confederation", said Vladimir Meciar, the chairman of HZDS in Wiena. At the press conference Vladimir Meciar refuted the opinion that Slovakia will follow left direction now. "Slovakia will not be a restoration of socialism. Slovakia will not go towards Ural. It looks for and will look for way towards West. We ask only to not be isolated", he said. The chairman of HZDS said as well that if the Czech side will agree with international sovereignty of Slovakia, then his movement is going to keep contemporary organization of market, finances, customs and defence. Declaration of Fifty Fifty personalities from Bohemia and Moravia signed a declaration about contemporary events that was named "The Declaration of Fifty". "We fully support a new elected Czech political representation and its way of negotiationg with Slovak side. We insist strongly on candidacy of Vaclav Havel for president", says the document. "In case of Slovakian decision to leave federation or to obstacle its further being, we are ready to devote all our energy for building a new Czech state". Referendum in Bohemia "Czech Initiative", a spontaneous declaration was signed by 35.000 people who support quick economical reform, candidacy of Vaclav Havel, as well as keeping the common state. Federation must be maintained. Referendum should take place as soon as possible also in Czech republic, says "Czech Initiative". Czechoslovak Parliament should Elect the President on July 3 Newly elected members of the Parliament will gather for its first meeting on June 25 and 26. Board of contemporary Parliament recommended that offices of the Parliament should not be elected secretly. Secret voting put the date of President's election on July 3. Richard Sacher doesn't want to be anti-candidate of Havel "I will not stand as anti-candidate for president against Vaclav Havel", said on June 15 Richard Sacher, Ex-minister of Interior . He is a member of Christian-Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party. "I will think about candidacy only if the president will not be elected in the first turn", said Richard Sacher in his interview for Lidove Noviny. Richard Sacher met Vladimir Meciar on June 17. Czechoslovakia Signs Three Declarations at the Conference in Rio The delegation that took part in the Conference on Environment and Development came back on June 16. Josef Vavrousek, the Minister of Environment, informed about the results of summit at the press conference. There were five documents accepted at the meeting. Czechoslovakia signed three of them: declaration on basic principles of nature protection; rules dealing with forest management and the most important, Agenda 21. It is a book of 700 pages and 40 chapters containing concrete obligations of all environmental aspects. Czechoslovakia was one of the few state that didn't sign the Convention on Climatic Changes and the Protection of Biodiversity . These documents were not discussed in all three governments. There are no financial obligations for Czechoslovakia resulting from the conference. Help from Northern countries to South was main topic. The countries of middle and eastern Europe were not in the focus of discussion. Bedrich Moldan, the spokesman of chair committee met personally George Bush and interperetated his wish to keep Czechoslovakia as common state. Tanec Festival The Fourth Tanec International Festival of Contemporary Dance and Movement Theatre from 20 th-30th June 1992 will present an equally exctiting but even more extensive programme. Dancing groups from italia, Switzerland, France, Izrael and Czechoslovakia will be introduced in Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Plzen and Piestany. O les Miserables The first run of Les Miserables musical will be in Prague's Theatre Na Vinohradech on June 18. Czechoslovak theatregoers will have possibility to see it until September 15. Czechoslovakia is 17 th country where the musical was introduced. 23 million people have already seen it. The Success of Miss Czechoslovakia Pavlina Baburkova, Miss Czechoslovakia 1992, came in second at the Miss Evropa 1992 competition. Pavlina is 19 years old model from Novy Bor.
