THE EVENTS OF THE LAST WEEK {from May 20- May 27} John Major in Czechoslovakia John Major, the prime minister of Great Britain, came to Czechoslovakia on May 26. John Major was invited by the President Vaclav Havel. Both state representatives signed Czechoslovak- British declaration. The trip of John Major, whose country chairs the EC now, had to support Poland, CSFR and Hungary to enter EC. John Major said the economic results and political stability are the necessary conditions to enter EC. Poland, Czechoslovakia nad Hungary must be able to compete other EC countries after their coming to EC. Mandela in Prague Nelson Mandela, the chairman of African National Congress {ANC}, visited Czechoslovakia in the beginning of this week. He shortly spoked to Vaclav Havel. Our president said after the meeting that the democratic process on South Africa is certain of succes. Mandela negotiated with Marian Calfa, the Prime Minister of federal government too. Prime Minister was interested in economical conception of ANC. He got the information that negroes' movement thinks about the nationalization of mines and financial institutions and he responded with the description of our bad expreriences in large nationalization. Bundestag Ratificated the Treaty German parliament ratificated the treaty with Czechoslovakia on May 20. Majority of MPs agreed the international document. At the same time the Parliament accepted one-side resolution concerning the treaty.Governemnt parties of Christian-liberal coalition CDU/CSU-FDP expects in the resolution that Czechoslovakia will solve the property's and country's demands of Sudeten Germans before entering EC. Coalition accepted the nulita of Munig Treatment from 1938. But according to German side treatment lost the validity after break-up of Czechoslovakia on March 1939 only. The acception of resolution rised again the discussion similar to previous discussion before treaty was assinged. President Havel considers the resolution to be useless but sees its improtance for internal agreement of German government coalition. He was suprised by the remark concerning the property because he expected the resolution would deal with the problems that are acceptable by both sides. Czechoslovak side can't accept the demand of property of Sudeten Germans in any case. Hungary Denounced an Agreement Hungarian republic denounced an agreement with Czechoslovakia about the counstruction of Gabcikovo-Nagymarosz water dam from 1977. We mention this matter in Carolina No 27. Czechoslovakia doesn't agree with the one-side decision and demands other negotiations. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the Hungarian procedure doesn't have the law background as Hungary expects. According to Czechoslovak representatives the agreement is still valid. When will be a New Parliament? The Board of Federal Assembly developed the schedule of a new Parliament. The first session of a new Parliament will gather on June 25 of 26 to elect the chairman of the Parliament. Federal government will step down at these days. Vaclav Havel should choose new government before the election of a new president - until June 3 or 5. It is possible that a new coalition government will not be completed at this time. Present federal government and president can act in that situation until October 5. A New Ambassador? Some Czech daily newspapers announced yesterday that Michael Zantovsky, the present spokesman of the President, should become the ambassador in USA. Rita Klimova, the present Czechoslovak ambassador wants to step down because of health reasons. The information came to public bceause of indiscredity of the federal minister. Against Temelin The members of Czechoslovak branch of Greenpeace movement demonstrated in the front of the Czech government building on May 27. The governemnt discussed the fate of uncompleted nuclear power station Temelin at this day. The nuclear power station is in the South Bohemia and consists of two blocks. It is besides the Gabcikovo dam the main topic of ecological protests. The government opposes that so big reactor as Temelin one was not liquidated yet. Some billions of crowns were already invested to the counstruction and economicts points out the fact that liquidation of small nuclear power station in USA cost three times more then construction. Greenpeace movement says that the problem of nuclear waste deposit was not solved yet. The waste will loose the radioactivity and reach the level of radiactovity comparable with natural uranium after 90 000 years. Editors Met in Prague Annual session of editors {FIEJ} and 45 th annual world congress of journalists was started in Prague on May 26. About 500 editors will take part in the session. The congress of journalists was opened by the President Vaclav Havel in the Prague's hotel Atrium. Chinese journalist Dai Qing was awarded by "Gold Feather", the price of FIEJ from Jiri Dientsbier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Czech Union of Editors is the member of FIEJ from 1991. Nelson Mnadela entered the conference on May 26. The Help to Ukrainia The trucks with medicaments, food and cloths for the Chernobyl children arrived to Ukrainia on Monday 25. The action was organized by the Center of Humanitary Help for Countrymen and the Committee of a Good Will. THE POLITICAL SPECTRUM IN CSFR BEFORE ELECTIONS 1992 Left Block The communistic party of Bohemia and Moravia {KSCM} and the social democratic party are the strongest opposition parties in Czech republic. They came to the coalition together with small party "Democratic left-wing". The coalition was named as Left Block {LB}. LB gets the support of 9% voters. KSCM doesn't have agressive campaign yet because it has a lof of members that are potential voters. Communists got 12% in the last elections. KSCM is the party that followed the former communistic party. Jiri Svoboda, the leader of KSCM, said the party didn't want to reach the situation before November 1989. Left Block express in the election programm dissatisfaction with the economical reform and general transformation of our society. They put some characteristics of the situation: overestimated restriction policy, unreasonable devalvation of our currency, nonsensible large restitutions, weak social network, privatization in anz case, corruption in state administration, commercial culture, nonvoluntary transformation of agricultural cooperatives, space for home and foreign speculants, restriction of trade union's rights. All these facts caused according to representatives of Left-Block unemploymency, rising of living costs, decrease of buying power, economic reccesion and debts of companies. The Left Block proposes social-stabil programme, policy of expensiv working power, control and legislative insurance of big privatization, support of "nonmarket culture", strenthging the administration and etc. According to investigations the possibility of getting into parliaments have the following parties: CZECH REPUBLIC -Czechoslovak People's Party/ Christian-Democratic Union. This party is Christian and right-wing. -Liberaly-Social Union that consists of Czechoslovak Socialistic Party, Agricultural Party and Green Party. It is left-wing party. -Movement for Self-administrated Democrasy- The Society for Moravia and Silesia. This party wants federation consisting from three subjects: Bohemia, Moravia -Silesia, and Slovakia. -Association for Republic- The Republican Party of Czechoslovakia. This party is extremely righ-wing party. SLOVAKIAN REPUBLIC -Democratic Party and Civic-Democratic Party. The coalition supports federation and reform. -Civic Democratic Union. The party is follow-party of Public Against Violence party that won last elections in Slovakia. -Wspolnota- Co-living- Egyutteles This is the coalition of minority groups. -Slovak christian-democratic movement {SKDH} The movements is former nationalistic wing of Christian-Democratic Movement that became independent CULTURAL SERVICE Prague's Spring 1992 Prague Spring, the international music festival, was opened by symfonic poem "My country" by Bedrich Smetana . The concert took place in People's House on May 12. Czech Philharmony was conducted by Z. Kosler. The music fest is devoted to 500 th anniversary of America's discovering as well as anniversaries of Komensky, Massenet, Rossini and Czech composers Otmar Macha and Ilja Hurnik. Wide known personalities as piano player Rudolf Firkusny, violin player Josef Suk, singers Manfred Hemm and Barbara Fink take part in the fest. Wien's Philharmony conducted by R. Fruhbeck de Burgos, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra from USA and Stutgart Chamber Orchestra will play in the concerts too. The music competition before Prague's Spring is the traditional event. More then 200 young artists from the whole world took part in it. The fist price in the violin playing won Japanesse girl Natsumi Tamai. The winner of trumpet playing became Jen Lindemann from Canada. Czechoslovak musician Radek Baborak was the youngest participant {he is 16} and won with Claudia Strenkert third price. The June 3, last day of fest will come soon. At this day will Czech Philharmony conducted by Z. Kosler play "Ninth Symphony" by Beethoven.
