"Apart from his talent, it was his independence, perseverance, strong will and hard demands of his own work that brought our film director his world renown.", said an article in Lidove noviny on Tuesday, Febr. 18th on the occasion of Milos Forman_s birthday. The same evening Czech TV showed his film Hair for the first time. The following Czech films were mentioned in the press:Firemen_s Ball, Competetion, Loves of a Blond and Black Peter . Lidove Noviny also mentioned that between the "new Czech wave" and Forman_s first Oscar, which he got for his film One Flew over the Cuckoo_s Nest in 1975 (he got his second Oscar in 1984 for Amadeus), Forman suffered a period of commercional failure with the film Taking Off. In spite of poverty and uncertainty he refused "average consumer goods" and waited for a big chance, which was the film version of Kesey_s novel. "We have to be grateful to Milos Forman not only for his master films - not to mention Hair, Ragtime and Valmont - but also for cosmopolitan experience, which he generously and usefully shares with us during his "returns of a lost son", continued Lidove noviny. The last idea of the article is also worth mentioning, "Forman_s analogy about beings who are so used to the certainty and comfort of a cage that they are afraid of freedom, which represents the snares of a jungle, is something we will remember for a long time."
