The E-mail News from Czechoslovakia This news may be published only with the "CAROLINA" designation. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* THE EVENTS OF THE LAST WEEK --------------------------- Due to the holidays we are presenting the events of the last two weeks/18.12.-8.1./ New Year's Speech of President Havel "The president's New Year's speech was a presentation of an tired man who is troubled by two year's experience in a practical policy. President recapitulated, he didn't imply or promise anything for the coming year" wrote journalist Jiri Hanak in his article "A Long Trip of Vaclav Havel" in LIDOVE NOVINY on January 3. In his opinion the best part of the President's speech is the column dealing with the President's proposals for the Parliament including the proposal on a new election law. Carolina quotes from the President's speech concerning a school education: "That's why our thanks belongs to the doctors and teachers who take care {very often under plaintive conditions getting lamentable payments} of our health and the development of our spirituality. Today we come to the year where we remember the 400 year anniversary of Jan Amos Komensky's birth. This year was declared the year of the culture and education. All of us from the child in kindergarten to the minister or president, need an education in the widest and deepest meaning. It is no shame or disgrace to be educated. Appreciation belongs to all people who are not ashamed of the education and to all people who provide a good education to others". Czech Minister of Justice Resigned "I didn't sign any cooperation with StB {secret police}", said Leon Richter, the Czech Minister of Justice. Czech press using the headlines "Being Very Tired I leave" and " Health Reasons and Slanders"- reported January 8 that minister would resign. L. Richter {member of the Civic Movement party} stated the health problems as the main reason of his step-down including as well the bad atmosphere around his personality at the last weeks when some newspapers wrote he was cooperationg with the secret police. He passed in his resignation on January 2 and it was accepted by the Czech National Council on January 8. His position will be filled by the candidate of Civil Democratic Party according so called Lany's Agreement. Civil Movement and Civil Democratic Party were created after the break-down of Civic Forum. Will the Controllers Start Striking? The trade union's organization of the air long-distance controlers declared a striking emergency starting from the New Year. Controllers asked for the change of the working programme in the civil aviation department of the federal transportation ministry. They demand a 162% increase of their salaries. Despite the negotiations between controllers and the tranportation's ministry there is no change in the trade union's decision to start a time-unlimited strike on Monday, January 13. Their decision means that there won't be any flights besides the emergency and life-rescuing ones. Minister of defence, L. Dobrovsky said it will not be possible to replace the civil long-distance controllers with army controlers. Vice-chairman of the federal government and minister of finances Vaclav Klaus criticised the action of the controllers as a dangerous action arousing social stir.
