Eberhard Bethge /Germany/ will be lecturing at Charles University on November 6, 1991. The topic of his lectureis "Dietrich Bonhoeffer and November 6, 1938". Prof. Bethge is one of few still living men who have met Dietrich Bonhoeffer, excellent German theologian, an active participant in so-called Church struggle in Germany 1933-39 and then a member of Abwehr, German intelligence service. He took part in unsuccesful attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1943. Bonhoeffer was in various concentration camps in 1943-45 and was executed on April 9, 1945. Prof. Bethge is presently one of the best experts of theology and life and work of. D. Bonhoeffer and one of the publishers of his works. Selected important events of last week /October 17-23. in --------------------------------------------------------------- Czechoslovakia -------------- Chaim Herzog, President of Israel, visited Czechoslovakia last week. On October 15, he has got the Memorial medal given by the Chancellor of Charles University prof. Radim Palous. Mr. Herzog is the first president of Israel who have visited Czechoslovakia from 1948 when the State of Jews was established. During his visit, Mr. President met with representatives of Czechoslovakia including president Vaclav Havel. He also visited Jewish town in Prague with its famous and unique Jewish cemetery and took part at the memorial in City of Terezin. Terezin was a ghetto during the 2nd World War where about 150 thousand Jews were placed and most of them died there. On October 16, Mr. President visited the memorial of holocaust and the synagogue in Bratislava, Slovakia. C u l t u r a l S e c t i o n ------------------------------- The international exhibition of computer equipment INVEX-COMPUTER will take place in Brno on October 22-25. The music festival AMADEUS MOZART INTERFEST 1991 IN PRAGUE will last till the end of October. The chamber orchestra GUTTA MUSICAE had a performance in Lobkowitz Palace in Prague Castle on October 13 and 20, as a part of the festival program. Prague children choir BAMBINI DI PRAGA was a host of AMERICAN BOYCHOIR from Princeton in Smetana's Hall of Prague Obecni dum. The concert was given as the commemoration of those who were tortured to death in concentration camp in City of Terezin. The festival VIA PRAGA MOZART OPEN dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the death of W. A. Mozart will continue till November 3rd. The Stavovske theatre /former Theatre of J. K. Tyl/ was officially opened on October 12. The play SBOHEM SOKRATE /GOOD BYE, SOCRATES/, written by Josef Topol, was performed on the first night. In this theatre W. A. Mozart conducted the first performance of his opera DON GIOVANNI in 1791.
